A dark repose covers my sin.
Laying awake I suffer.
Not heavy or sensual,
My heart longs for a way.
Only He could intervene.
And it is not right at this time that I ask Him.
Steal away, steal away.
Gratitude is my only companion.
Knowing my bound up solitude.
Her help is focused solely to mine heart.
Where the softening peels back the layers.
Both feet are on the ground,
And, it is still not right that I ask Him.
Steal away, steal away.
The voyage is long and bow to stern she hides me.
In the hollows of this ship I tarry.
And it’s dark, a little damp, but familiar now.
Some things remain the same, and
Perish the thought of what could be,
And still, it is not right that I ask Him.
Steal away, steal away.
I would that I should make my own way,
But it’s just “kicking against the pricks,” isn’t it?
And I feel cast to the wind without much of a sail;
Without much of any control.
But a firm grasp on a rudder too big for me.
And it is still not right that I should ask Him.
Steal away, steal away.
My life is a passing voyage.
Her life anew and full of possibility.
Her life a fixture of what remains,
After all things tested, and all things true.
It is very well for her that I am so far and away.
And it is Not right that I ask Him!
Steal away,
Steal away, … my heart.
